Pedro Lozano's Lip Training Exercises for the Trumpet is subtitled "for control of tone, intonation, AND flexibility to modulate tones to any intensity and in any register of the instrument. Includes a daily routine of practice." Lozano was the principal trombonist of the Mexico City Symphony and published two editions of this lip flexibility method, one for the trombone in bass clef and one for trumpet in treble clef. The edition before you is the treble clef edition. This book has been out of print for many decades and I am very happy to have it back in circulation. The best part about Lozano's flexibility method is that it is not just a collection of lip slur exercises. The preface gives an in-depth account of his strategy for increasing your flexibility, and each new area of the book includes explicit instructions for how to negotiate the coming exercises. Arthur Motycka's fantastic "Technical Studies for the Advanced Trumpeter" has been long out of print, but it is time to pick it from obscurity and shine a light on one of the gems of the trumpet repertoire. I could go on and on about how wonderful this book is, but I would much rather quote one of the greats, Doc Severinsen, as he writes in the forward:

This advanced trumpet studies book is filled with supplemental materials for each task in the daily practice period. There are post warm ups, exercises for fingering and range problems, articulation studies, and etudes so necessary in developing the skills of today's modern trumpet player. The gradation of materials found is appropriate for the advanced high school trumpet player as well as the university or professional trumpeter. -Doc Serverinsen

Mancini's Lip, Breath, and Sound Technique is an extension on his book of Daily Studies, starting from the same foundation but extended far beyond in terms of technique and facility. With the addition of studies/etudes, theme and variations, and scales of all sorts, it is more like a miniature trumpet method than a simple exercise book. It straddles the line well and makes for an interesting book to put into your repertoire. Check out the samples to the left and get an immediate PDF download above.

Charles Colin's Scales and Chords for Advanced Technique includes all major and minor scales, chords and arpeggiated patterns across the entire range of the instrument. Intended for intermediate and advanced players, this book merges seamlessly into your daily practice to give you a good bit of finger dexterity and flexibility practice while drilling key signatures, all at the same time. To the left you will see some sample pages in a few different keys to give you an idea of what you are getting, then you can grab an immediate PDF download above.

“Rhythms Complete” By Bugs Bower and Dr. Charles Colin is the most widely used primer in the world for teaching rhythm, syncopation and phrasing, employing a very melodic format of exercises in rhythmic structures and combinations of rhythms. It requires time, practice and repetition to master, however once you can read this in 4/4 and cut time correctly, you will be able to read anything. While written especially for the beginning/intermediate levels, it is also used by advanced players of the french horn as a daily practice book to maintain facility. This wonderful three-part method is like a more modern and complete Arban or Saint-Jacome Grand Method, with much better progressive studies, along with tunes and solos that include full piano parts, followed up with duets, trios, and quartets to get the entire studio involved. Compiled by L. Chumov, the former professor of trumpet at the Moscow Conservatory, this fantastic mixture of original compositions along side adaptations of the great composers of the 19th and 20th centuries is perfect for players at all levels. Honestly, this is like getting three books for the price of one, if not more. Chumov's 90 Studies in Book One is worth the price of admission alone. The same goes for the duets, trios, AND the quartets in the final book. This is an incredible collection! To get an idea of what you will find in each of the three books, just take a look below. Clifford Lillya's Method for Trumpet is a two book series that takes students from absolute beginners all the way through to playing at an intermediate + level. Systematically progressive, and very thoughtfully laid out, this unedited version is exactly as it was first published in 1937. The both books are laid out in 8 different units. Each unit is used to achieve a different goal, and each one builds on the foundation laid by the previous unit. In book one the focus is on increasing the range step by step in both directions while simultaneously working on legato, articulation, and various rhythms. Book two is more in-depth, teaching players to develop a daily routine, learn advanced scales, syncopation, practice tonal blending in a section, and learn complicated etudes. I have included the full 16 unit breakdown in the samples to the left, along with tons of samples pages to give you an idea of what you are in for. When you are ready, click above to purchase the complete two book set and start on a fruitful journey of discovery. You are going to love it!
