Parès is famous for his book of daily exercises and scales (which we sell right here) but we are very happy to have dug up a very old, long out of print Complete Trumpet Method by Parès that has not been published since 1895. There are two versions of this book. One is entitled "Method de Cornet a Pistons" and is meant for a lower alto trumpet (you can see from the finger chart in the sample pages here). This version here is meant for a keyed bugle, which make it the correct method for a modern trumpet player to play from without transposing. This book is available here in the original French, but don't worry if you are an English speaker, only the first 14 pages or so are text, and the rest is almost all music (you can make sense of it anyways if you have been around the trumpet method block a few times). We are so proud to help pull these books out of obscurity. Have a look at some samples to the left and get an immediate PDF download above. *Note: We always meticulously clean the books we sell, and this is no exception. BUT, this book from pre-1900 used paper impregnated with dark brown fibres for strength and longevity. We removed most of them in the scan but you can still see some (as you can see in the samples). It is not a problem, but worth noting.

"Whoso bloweth his own horn, by himself shall his horn be blown."  So reads the preface to Arthur Amsden's Celebrated Duets (or Practice Duets as they are sometimes called). His extensive preface has been included in the samples to the left, so I will leave you to read about the genesis of this book. Simply put, duet playing with an experienced partner has the ability to improve your level and sharpen your skills, and the more we partake in daily duet playing, the better players we become. Jakob Dont's 24 Etudes & Caprices has become a staple of advanced violin education. Generally, developing violinists work on Dont's Opus 35 after Kreutzer's 42 Etudes and before the Paganini Caprices. All of these exercises and pieces focus on aspects of technique. Erik Veldkamp is the world's foremost editor and arranger of studies for trumpet, and the adaptation of these 7 selections from Jakob Dont take classic etude material and make it vital to the advanced daily practice of modern trumpeters. These studies are not easy. You will need extra breaths, and will need to take extra time to go over the hardest bits, but in the end you will be so satisfied with the challenge that you will be back for more. William' Bell's Arban Interpretations is an updating of the Arban text to meet the challenges of modern brass playing. Revised for tuba, trombone, and baritone, this book covers all of the areas of the original Arban's with a modern twist. Below I will include the author's foreword, and to the left you can play through the first three pages for free. This huge 142 page book should be in the library of any serious low brass professional. "This book is the culmination of a long-lived desire to revise existing bass clef Arban methods. I feel that the great value of the Arban lies in the wealth of material provided for technical study, especially those chapters dealing with dotted eighths and sixteenths, lip slurs, fingered slurs, chromatic triplets, the grupetto, the trill and mordente, grace notes, triple tonguing and double tonguing. Some of our brass pedagogues complain of the monotony of the Arban exercises but how can we reach technical perfection without disciplined repetition? The Arban is dated in many respects but for development of technique it is still the brass player's musical bible. I have included the scale and arpeggio routine because this should comprise the first part of daily practice." ~ William Bell

This edition of Bellstedt's 12 Technical Studies is from the library of Charles Colin. There are a few different editions floating around, the original for instance can be found right here. I am not sure I can write up the 12 Famous Technical Studies by Herman Bellstedt any better than the expert Frank Simon who wrote: “Of the many methods and etudes that have been written for the cornet and trumpet, none contributed as much to my success as a cornetist than the Twelve TEchnical Stuides by Herman Bellstedt. He was a master of the instrument and it contains a wealth of valuable and proven studies which, if studied diligently, will develop the tone, endurance and technique to a remarkable degree. They are an indispensible part of daily practise and no ambitions player should be without them.” Need I say more? Samples to the left and immediate digital download available above.

From the Author: "The warm-up is an integral component of every brass player’s daily practice. Brass teachers have always been at odds as to what a good warm-up should consist of. My teacher Claude Gordon believed that there should be no prescribed warm-up, as the first notes of the day would fill that need. Others believe in a set warm-up that is done the same every day and never changes. And then there are those teachers who believe a warm-up should cover every aspect of playing, sometimes lasting two hours or more. I end up in the middle of all this with The Progressive Warm-Up. When does the warm-up become practicing? A warm-up should consist of familiar material, but not so familiar that it becomes stale. It should also address the fundamental aspects of trumpet playing without over-pushing the limits of our technique. Follow the warm-up with a technique session and then work on music. This format will keep your practice fresh, consistent and productive." The Progressive Warm-Up consists of three groups of foundation exercises: I. Flow Studies II. Tonguing III. The following Etudes are a first step to getting used to performing on the piccolo trumpet. The warm-up exercises in this book are the exercises that I use daily for my preparation on the piccolo trumpet. As the word 'warm-up' indicates, they are to be used to get your muscles into shape in a fairly "comfortable" manner in order to allow you to move on to your practice or performance on the instrument for that day. This is why you will notice that the recommendations for dynamics never exceed the mf marking in the warm-ups. It doesn't mean that you won't ever play for ff on a piccolo trumpet but the warm-up is not the time to do it. These warm ups are followed by wonderful original etudes for the piccolo trumpet, all composed by Allan Colin, and are a great starting place for piccolo trumpet etude repertoire. Chris Gekker is the only other book of comparable piccolo studies that I can think of, and having more of this great literature is wonderful for the contemporary trumpet catalogue. The Professional's Key is the prescribed tonic for the trombone players who find it difficult to master the art of triple and double tonguing. Many players and students may attribute their failure to successfully perform, to the limited amount of material available. With the use of the "Professional's Key" in one's daily practice routine, the playing of the most difficult solos and technical passages will gradually become easier. After you make your way through this course in articulation, you are greeted with a fantastically difficult theme and variations on "She'll Be Coming Around the Moutain". This solo is a hoot, and when you are able to get through all 15 variations you will be setting the gold standard for multiple tonguing on the trombone.
