Mel was principal trumpet of the Metropolitan Opera from 1958 until he retired in 2003. During his tenure, he was famous for his exceptional transposition skills, and was a long time champion of using smaller trumpets to play the most challenging parts in the operatic repertoire.
It is no surprise, then, that Mel wrote this book of transposition studies for the orchestral trumpeter. Unlike transposition studies from Sachse or Williams, these studies are much more advanced, more deeply rooted in the orchestral style, and much more challenging (and rewarding) overall. There is technical virtuosity, creativity, and whimsy in these studies that reflect a lot of Mel’s character. These studies are to be treasured.

This book is part of Mel Broiles Autograph Collection. Mel was blessed with a wonderful penmanship, and this series of books celebrates the lost art of manuscript music writing.
