This set of exercises grew out of the desire to challenge the modern trumpeter beyond the “moving long-tone” studies in Herbert L. Clarke’s book Technical Studies for the Cornet/Trumpet. Kevin Woods used Clarke’s studies in his practice for over 25 years. Unfortunately, he found that even with a focus on mindful intentionality, he’d often go on autopilot while playing the exercises. This was the impetus for creating Beyond Clarke, which includes combinations of whole and half steps but intentionally avoids staying in one specific key or mode. These exercises are not meant to replace H.L. Clarke’s but supplement them to engage and challenge today’s trumpeters.
Each of the ten studies in this book is a complete chapter containing a set of variations on the original study that culminates in a reimagining of the finishing etude with creative and dramatic flare by Kevin Woods.
