I know this is a bit of a taboo subject. Young players are often looking for transposed parts, and all of us veterans tell them to learn to transpose or stop playing the trumpet, just like we had to!

BUT, the problem with this is the fact that there are many circumstances where a transposed part is helpful. This includes when we are trying out excerpts for an audition and want to see how it lies on every horn we own, when we are performing in a high pressure situation where mistakes are not an option, or when the part in question is downright annoying to transpose (I’m looking at you, Histoire du Soldat!).
