Eugene Foveau compiled this wonderful collection of advanced trumpet excerpts under the title “Traits Difficiles: Advanced orchestral excerpts from symphonic and operatic works for the trumpet.” These are beautifully typewritten, much easier to read than the usual parts you might find on your stand, and give you only what you need, the required excerpt with no distractions. Cornet version is available here (LINK), and the piccolo trumpet edition is available here (LINK).
From the Preface:
Wind instruments in the orchestra are in a much more precarious position than bowed instruments. With few exceptions, the latter operate in polyphony as a section. The collective voice that emerges from each group is the result of an average in which individual imperfections blend and go unnoticed because it is rare for them to play passages on their own.
On the contrary, the first soloist in each wind instrument section is often in the spotlight; sometimes the second and the third as well. When the part they are responsible for is exposed or challenging, they know that they might see the indication “solo,” and they are alone in upholding the family’s honor.
