This complete album, note-for-note transcription of Claudio Roditi’s CLAUDIO! is part of a tremendous project by Adrian Ruiz to transcribe the complete discography of this legendary performer. In collaboration with the Roditi estate, qPress will be bringing you the definitive series of his albums with notable forwards and liner notes whenever possible.
Francis Davis writes in the Album’s liner notes that, “Although CLAUDIO! is Roditi’s second album as a leader, it is the first to feature his crackling trumpet style in a straight ahead setting designed to do it most justice, with hand-picked personnel and repertoire. Straight ahead or no, however, too much craft has gone into the deceptively simple arrangements, and too much care has gone into achieving a unified group sound, for CLAUDIO! to be mistaken for a run-of-the-mill blowing date.”
from About “Claudio!” from Kristen A. Park:
Recording CLAUDIO! fulfilled a dream Claudio Roditi had. He’d secretly held it since his childhood and early teenage years: to make a jazz album. Jazz albums were everything to Claudio. After he set his heart on the trumpet—at the age of nine, in 1955—he asked his father, Alberto Roditi, to buy him albums with trumpets and/or trumpeters on the cover. That got the ball rolling. The records Alberto found at the time in Rio de Janeiro (where Claudio and his parents lived for half of each year) included LPs by Harry James, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, and Ray Anthony, for starters. A few years later, an American uncle, Harold “Tax” Taxman, introduced Claudio to the massive jazz LP collection he had brought from Chicago after marrying Claudio’s aunt, Aparecida “Cida” de Braga Taxman. Claudio completely fell for the sounds of Bird, Miles, Lee, and others. Jazz albums were essential in forming Claudio’s taste for jazz, especially bebop. At that point, he was wondering: How do I learn to play it?
