We have multiple books from Gastoldi on qPress now, and they are wonderful for two very good reasons. The first reason is that beautiful, polyphonic, tonal duos like these work extremely well as prelude music for church, weddings, funerals, and other low key events. The second is that they offer a wonderful reading challenge for studio use. Some of these pieces should be transposed into different keys or played on smaller trumpets, and parts should be brought down or up the octave as needed.
As for the compositions, this book shows Gastoldi occupied with what was called “home” music in the baroque era, nothing like the more popular dance songs and church music of the time. These pieces are more like the canzona of the time, a synthesis of elements of style of various origins. Since nothing in the book infers a specific instrumentation, there are various possibilities for modern performance, as long as they are like instruments that can read in treble clef they will work beautifully.
