Prosper Gattermann’s “Classical Studies” (Etudes Classiques) is the most important collection of trumpet studies to be released since Charlier’s 36 Plus or 32 Refinement Studies. These 85 progressive studies are the most technically involved works for trumpet from this time period, and require a depth of musical understanding not seen in trumpet literature beyond Charlier, Chavanne, Brandt, and a handful of other masters of the instrument.
This book has been completely re-engraved and edited by John Laverty, and any uncommon French notes have been translated into English, making it easy to read and easy to understand. It is almost impossible to believe that these were written before Charlier’s books, and even harder to imagine that the contemporary composers we revere for their most famous trumpet works were not directly inspired by this book. A long lost European study collection that stands at the beginning of the second golden age of the trumpet, brought back into worldwide circulation by qPress. This is what we live for.
