Ben Paisner’s “30 Studies in Swing” is a classic study book focused on teaching inexperienced jazz/swing players how to phrase and stylize figures in the swing idiom. This is the sister publication to the trumpet edition found right here.
These studies are built progressively, getting more and more difficult as the book goes on. Each new etude is styled after a specific type of swing chart, and homes in on one fundamental articulation, rhythm, or accent that makes the entire thing work properly. Every etude has a few sentences before it giving context to the study and explains what you should be looking out for. Something so beautifully laid out and thoughtfully put together should never have gone out of print. I am thrilled to make this available to a new generation of trombonists.
