Channt for Unaccompanied Trumpet is a one-movement work in sectionalized form. Though there are some repeated sections, the work does not fit a specific formal outline. Melodies are derived from diatonic resources and generally remain in the tonal center of C.
Chant is not metered and rhythmic patterns are not difficult. The quarter-note is constant throughout the piece. Triple-tonguing and flexibility for lip slurs up to a fifth are required for this work. The opening chant motive is based on the ascending fifth, and major and minor thirds. The sections which follow elaborate on the opening motive without being truly repetitive. Except for a brief passage in the high register, the piece remains in the middle tessitura.
