Long tones are a part of every warm up routine. What is interesting about this book by Harold Branch is that it uses the long tone/breath control portion of your routine to also work on major and minor scales and chords, dominant / diminished / augmented chords, chromatic scales & intervals, and diatonic intervals of every size and quality. By the time you get to octaves and random interval sequences your ear is as warmed up as your chops.
Harold Branch writes “long tones have always been a mainstay of teachers. Their students do them in some form or another each day. This book gives a complete picture of what is available for this important part of warmups. Naturally, I advise caution in development. It takes time to develop even one extra note. Do not be discouraged if it does not come at once, even with practice. An important feature of this book is the key concept. You are not just “pushing valves down” in 7 positions, but working in all major and minor keys. Note that all the exercises in the book have a time signature. Do not play long tones ad lib. They must be in time!”
