George “Pee Wee” Erwin is the renowned and respected master of Dixieland trumpet playing. His accomplishments include performances with the bands of Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey, among others, in addition to leadership of his own sextet, which was long the featured group at New York City’s famous Nick’s. Mr. Erwin was a member of both the NBC and CBS musical staffs, and a member of the faculty of Farleigh Dickinson University, New Jersey.
The fifteen duets of A Wee Bit of Dixie all stem from various aspects of the Dixieland tradition, and prove Pee Wee Erwin to be as able a writer as he is an interpreter of the music. It is also indicative of Mr. Erwin’s astute musicianship that these pieces are actually duets, that is, not just melodies with accompaniments. It is hoped that players find A Wee Bit of Dixie both enjoyable and stimulating, musically, in addition to developing through it an understanding of the Dixieland music exemplified by the talents of Pee Wee Erwin.
