32 Pieces for Unequal Instruments By Giovanni Gastoldi

$9.99

Quantity

This selection of duos is taken from a collection that Giovanni Gastoldi published in 1598. The collection consists of 36 pieces for two melodic instruments, of which only the first 20 were by Gastoldi himself. The remainder were contributed by members of the composers’ circle in Milan, where Gastoldi also worked for a time.

This book shows Gastoldi occupied with what was called “home” music in the baroque era, nothing like the more popular dance songs and church music of the time. These pieces are more like the canzona of the time, a synthesis of elements of style of various origins. Since nothing in the book infers a specific instrumentation, there are various possibilities for modern performance. They would have been played at the time using recorders, viols, or trombones, but trumpets, violins, cellos, oboes, and flutes could all be used as well. Trumpet on top and trombone on bottom, or tenor trombone on top with bass trombone on the bottom are personal favorites.
