From the forward:
Program Note
At the Beach is an evocation of the mood of the sea-side band concerts of yesteryear. The composer treats the melodic flourishes of the period with “tongue in cheek” and blends the contemporary sophistication with the idiom of the past.
The Composer
Virgil Thomson is equally well known as a composer and as a writer on music. A graduate of Harvard, where he was awarded the Naumberg and Payne fellowships, he later received fellowships from the École Normale de Paris and from the Juilliard School of Music. His most famous work is Four Saints in Three Acts, with a libretto by Gertrude Stein. He has composed many works for orchestra, films, chamber groups, etc. From 1940 to 1954 he was music critic of the New York Herald Tribune.
