“The Trumpet’s Loud Clangour” is from the Ode for Saint Cecilia of 1739. The text is by John Dryden (1631-1700) and is the same as was set earlier by Henry Purcell. The florid style of the clarino trumpet is evident in this selection, ascending to its sixteenth harmonic in the introduction and negotiating interval leaps not demanded by the earlier English repertory. Handel repeated the tune with full chorus in the original version and the singer may wish to do so at his discretion.
The tympani contribution is important and a separate part has been provided. All dynamics and any bracketed material are editorial additions.
Scored for Trumpet, Organ, Voice, and Timpani. Samples from the score to the left, an immediate digital download above.
