Thomas Darter was born in Livermore, California on February 13, 1949. He attended Cornell University, where he studied composition, theory, and conducting with Robert Palmer and Karel Husa. In 1969, he graduated Summa Cum Laude in Music, and in 1972 completed a Master of Fine Arts degree. Mr. Darter is currently Instructor of Music Theory and Composition, and Director of the Contemporary Music Ensemble at the Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University.
This Sonatina is comprised of 3 movements (aphorisms) for unaccompanied trumpet. The range is from low G below the staff to high C above, and features many complex rhythms that require virtuosic dexterity.
