This double-LP was a major disappointment when it came out in 1979 due to the consistently crummy recording quality. The playing is actually somewhat historic, a jam session featuring the ill-fated Clifford Brown, tenorman Sonny Rollins (who was playing with Brownie for the first time), drummer Max Roach and a few other musicians (Nicky Hill on tenor, pianist Billy Wallace, guitarist Leo Blevins and bassist George Morrow). But many of these lengthy tunes (“I’ll Remember April” is over 30 minutes long). Overall, a wonderful addition to Clifford Brown’s catalogue for his incredible performance, and at 81 pages, this is an absolutely HUGE transcription book.
This book is a part of the highly ambitious Erik Veldkamp project to completely transcribe every note Clifford Brown ever put on record. You get the full tunes, complete with chord changes, expertly engraved, and ready for you to drop the needle and play along to your favourite records.
