Rodolphe Kreutzer’s “16 Studies for Trombone” comes from the great work for violin entitled “42 Etudes and Caprices for Violin”. It is a standard of the violin repertoire and these 16 selected studies have been transcribed and adapted for the trombone.
When moving string-works over to the brass world the two things that should come to mind are endurance and technique. When trombonists are blowing through their teeth, violinists are just warming up, and their ability to move across the strings pushes our flexibility beyond the usual trombone part-writing we are used to.
This is a great exercise in pushing our limits and exploring a whole different type of writing. I have included a few selections for free in the samples, then you can grab an immediate PDF download above.
