Gabrieli’s Sacrae Symphoniae (1597) No. 1 Canzon Primi Toni à 8 is written for 4 Trumpets and 4 Trombones, split into 2 choirs.
Hidden within Gabrieli’s Sacrae Symphoniae of 1597, amidst a collection of forty-five vocal compositions, are sixteen pieces that constitute one of the earliest significant landmarks in instrumental ensemble music. Among these are fourteen canzoni and two sonatas, which not only excel within their genre during that period but also remained unparalleled for decades thereafter, often only rivaled by Gabrieli himself. Gabrieli’s contributions to the evolution of the canzona and sonata are noteworthy: he was the first to compose for more than eight parts and to employ polychoral techniques. Additionally, he pioneered the juxtaposition of polyphonic and homophonic textures, as well as duple and triple meters within a single composition, demonstrating a keen sense of tonal color and specified instrumentation for dramatic effect.
