Thus the Gloomy World appears in Act 5 of Henry Purcell’s masque The Fairy Queen. This work represents some of Purcell’s more ornate output. This aria was originally scored for countertenor, but is frequently performed by soprano.
This reduction, but the masterful Gerald Endsley, is for solo voice, trumpet, and continuo. As a da capo aria, the music has two distinct sections and takes the form A-B-A. The A section should be taken at a bright pace, and the B section slowed considerably.
