Claude B. Smith’s Variety Etudes for Trumpet or Cornet is a really interesting and unique addition to the trumpet catalogue. Instead of just writing a bunch of unrelated studies, he decided to do things a bit differently. He interspersed his etudes with embouchure builders and scale studies that correspond in both key and range to the study that proceeds it. By dropping technical and fundamental exercises in and around stylistic etudes, Smith is able to engage all areas of playing, which keeping you on your toes, challenging you, and laying out a progressive method of study.
