Richard Stegmann’s “The Orchestra Trumpeter” is subtitled “School of Transposition”. Stegamnn writes in his forward:

“After being the solo trumpeter of the Berlin Philharmonic and a teacher of the trumpet at the conservatory of music of the Bavarian State in Wuerzburg, I found out that a pupil of the trumpet cannot be trained systematically to “orchestra maturity” with the literature of the trumpet presently at hand. This is why I decided to extend the material of study for trumpet in the form of a transposition method to fill in what was lacking from the education of aspiring trumpeters.”

Unlike most orchestral methods, this is not full of excerpts. Instead it is nearly 100 pages of wonderful exercises in transposition, style, technique, rhythm, time signatures, and key signatures adapted and re-written in the style of modern orchestra brass writing. This is an incredibly inventive book and represents years of practice material for the aspiring trumpeter.

The samples do not even begin to scratch the surface, there is so much in this book that I am happy to call it the most thorough orchestral method AND transposition method I have ever seen.
