All professional trumpeters know Caffarelli for his 100 Melodic Transposition Studies, and his 16 Etudes de Perfectionnement (Advanced Studies), but few (if any) know of this recently unearthed volume, “The Art of Trumpet Playing”.

This 108 page method book takes his work from etude writing into the world of the complete trumpet method. This book takes students from the absolute beginning of trumpet playing and takes them well into the intermediate level. In fact, this book stands as a perfect preface to Cafarelli’s two most common books listed above and introduces new students to his wonderful musical style.

From the forward: “The study of the Trumpet, as well as that of any other instrument, is a very exacting thing, and requires from the student attention, good will, and perseverance. He who wants to become a good player must absolutely avoid starting in the wrong way, in order not to lose time, work, and breath. It would be like walking down the wrong street: the farther one goes, the farther one is from one’s destination.”

Part I begins with preliminary tone exercises, scales, syncopation and rhythms, and articulations. This moves on to intervals, time, key signatures, the natural harmonic scale, high notes, and chromatics.

Part II focuses on the how to practice and how to interpret music in a artistic way. This section included his wonderful “24 studies in different keys”, and a full section on multiple tonguing. Few composers write so idiomatically for the trumpet. This is truly a wonderful method to have in your collection, even for the etudes alone.
