Technical exercises should strive to duplicate various playing situations the trumpet player will encounter in actual performance situations. There have been many technique development books that have been widely used and have served their purpose well. Relevance is the key, however, and while many of these books have helped the player develop a solid foundation of trumpet technique, few have provided the player with drills duplicating the scale patterns found in today’s jazz and commercial music. 

The exercises presented here will help fulfill that need for the commercial trumpet player. Although many of these scales and patterns are intended for use in jazz improvisation work, they are just as relevant for the section player since many of these same scales and patterns appear in the written parts of jazz composers and arrangers.
