Roy Eldridge’s “Short Cut to Good Ad-Libbing (A new concise method in the art of improvisation)” is finally back in circulation, and only at qPress! I am so thrilled to have this long form book on jazz improvisation by one of the greatest trumpeters of his generation available again. Books like these are way too important to ever go out of print.
Roy outlines the goals of his book and what is required to get started in his introduction. Namely, this book is for people who can read music and play popular tunes without stumbling. He says that this book is not for learning how to PLAY a tune but rather how to play WITH a tune, if you catch his meaning. Some understanding of scales is important, but in depth chord knowledge is not needed as it is covered in the book.
What will you be able to do once you go through this book? You will be able to put your own feelings, style, and phrasing into popular tunes using ad-libbing techniques that are presented in a simple and straightforward manner. A great book for anyone and everyone.
