Vladislav Mikhailovich Blazhevich was born in Tregubovko, in the government of Smolensk, on August 3, 1881. He was a remarkable trombonist, teacher, conductor, and composer. Read about the genesis for this book from Bill Hampton’s foreword:

I first became aware and interested in these etudes during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. As there were no rehearsals being held and no sense of when public performances would again become commonplace, I started spending more time online and listening to various trumpet players posting videos of themselves performing etudes. I came across Mr. Lichtmann’s edition and was interested in seeking out the remaining 36 etudes not originally included. What I found were studies designed to teach the trombonist how to fluidly switch between bass, tenor, and alto clef—not a skill used by most trumpet players.

However, many of these remaining etudes were written in such a way as to teach transposition, a skill much needed and used universally by trumpet players. And as the book was already well organized in terms of technical difficulty (range, key signature, rhythmic complexity, etc.), this adaptation was a natural expansion of all the work Jay had already done. Like him, I, too, have altered key signatures, time signatures, and occasionally notes, due to range considerations as well as adding suggestions for dynamics, articulations, phrasing, etc.

It is extremely exciting to have these famous studies available for the trumpet for the first time. The versatility is incredible. You can play them as written if you are working on style and substance, and then begin transposing to work on your theoretical skills, too.

In the samples, you can find some writeups and studies to try for free. Once you are ready click above for an immediate digital download.
