Digital Download

Gabrieli’s Sacrae Symphoniae (1597) No.9 Canzon Duodecimi Toni à 10 (No. 2) is written for 6 Trumpets and 4 Trombones.

Concealed within the depths of Gabrieli’s Sacrae Symphoniae of 1597, amidst a myriad of forty-five vocal compositions, are sixteen pieces that represent early landmarks in instrumental ensemble music. This compilation consists of fourteen canzoni and two sonatas, distinguished by their exceptional quality within their contemporary genre, rarely equaled in the subsequent decades, primarily due to Gabrieli’s ingenuity. Gabrieli’s influence on the evolution of the canzona and sonata is noteworthy: he was at the forefront of composers who explored compositions exceeding eight parts and utilized polychoral techniques. Additionally, his innovative approach encompassed the juxtaposition of polyphonic and homophonic textures, as well as the seamless integration of duple and triple meters within individual works, all while demonstrating a discerning ear for tonal nuances and specified instrumentation to evoke dramatic effects.
