Largo al Factotum is sung by the entrance of Figaro, the main character, in Rossini’s classic opera Il Barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville). Rossini’s opera is full of beautiful and recognizable arias but this one, written for baritone, is possibly the most renowned for its difficulty and excitement.
Crucial to the successful performance of Largo al Factotum is the soloist’s ability to engage with the accompaniment. This is one thing when being accompanied by a piano, but a whole new challenge when standing in front of a full wind ensemble.
