You may not recognize Gustave Langenus’ name at sight, but he has written one of the best and most approachable books on trumpet transposition out there. Instead of hundreds of pages of explanation behind the theory of transposition, he begins with a few introductory paragraphs then you are learning by example. This book is filled with instrumental studies you are meant to transpose on your trumpet, and each is proceeded by a “Mental Study” that is a harder, random collection of notes, for you to transpose in your head to centre yourself in the new key. It is very effective and I am shocked I have not seen this technique before.
The studies are idiomatic and interesting, and the mental studies really get your brain firing on all cylinders. Check out some samples to the left then grab an immediate PDF download above.
