Pee Wee Erwin was a monster player in his time. He played with Isham Jones, Benny Goodman, Ray Noble, Tommy Dorsey and many of the biggest bands of the era. His method book was written because he was convinced anyone could learn to play with well thought out instructions, no need for a teacher to guide you. Also included a recording of Pee Wee Erwin himself playing 17 of the exercises. How cool is it to have this archival recording available again?

Here is what he says about the structure in his foreword:

“In playing the trumpet five essential factors must be coordinated: 1) placing the mouthpiece on the lips (embouchure); 2) controlling the breath forming the sound; 3) tonguing; 4) fingering; and 5) hearing the notes in their proper pitch. Each of these factors is of equal importance and each must be mastered singly and then together before a performer will have the feeling of security to proceed to more complicated phases of performance. The exercises in this book have been carefully planned and designed for you to acquire automatically the proper coordination of all five of these essentials.

It has been my aim to make the exercises brief, yet alive and interesting. Whenever possible, familiar tunes have been used to illustrate points. Primary musical terms and markings and expression marks are introduced throughout the lessons. Each is clearly defined and adequately illustrated.” Pee Wee Erwin

After all of the instruction, the players gets to play in every key, with melodies and solos written out in each key signature to help you hear the new keys as you go. It is a key approach to playing to this day and should be passed down for generations to come.
