From the Author: As a preliminary to the study which deals with Triple Tonguing exclusively, I wish to point out the importance of its development, and the necessity of being able to play it skillfully. When the Student has developed the use of the Triple Tongue, he will find that during the process of mastering it, the LIP MUSCLES have developed a flexibility through the speed that he has acquired, that could not be attained by the use of Single Tonguing Only.

It also offers a greater field for Solo Playing, there are many fine Cornet Solos which feature a few measures to Triple Tonguing, and the musician who has not the ability to Triple Tongue will have to dispense with many a good solo. I have played, and have heard o?thers play, at various times, difficult Solos in which there was no Triple Tonguing used, and have noticed particularly the fact that these Solos, although played WELL INDEED failed to make the “Hit” that the other Solos which featured the Triple Tonguing had made, although the Triple Tongue Solos were much easier to play.

The object of both Double and Triple Tonguing is to render passages that call for rapid execution, much easier of performance. If properly studied, there should be no perceptible difference from Single Tonguing. The use of either must be left largely to the student according to his natural ability, but it is important to bear in mind that in no case must either be used where Single Tonguing is possible. ~ Ernest Pechin
