A long lost Grand Method is making its way back into circulation, and it is a stunner! Albert Prevet was the solo trumpeter of the Republican Guard Band in France, and during his time there, he penned this grand method with a very specific purpose in mind: to make a long and in-depth book about trumpet playing that does not go too high, too fast. That is the purpose of the New Method by Prevet, and it fulfills this duty admirably.
Yes, this book is in French, but there is hardly any text. In fact, the most important bit is the foreword and I have translated it for you below:
“I have tried, in this new method, to compose for younger players who want to learn the cornet or trumpet, studies where a student of a young age can focus on the quality of attack and quality of tone, all without exceeding a G above the staff.
My intention has been to develop these two qualities through advice and exercises that will not tire young students. The teachers who adopt my method will see that my main idea is to encourage students, and I feel as though I have succeeded.” A. Prevet
There is so much in this book that it is hard to write about it all here, but I will say this: Not only are the Duets and Air & Variations worth the price of admission alone, there is one more thing that makes this method wonderful. And that is the focus on melody and playing actual MUSIC. Every area has only a short exercise before moving into melodies, studies, solos, and duets that focus on the technique in question. When you focus on music, you focus the mind, and studying quickly becomes joyous.
