Bunny Berigan’s Modern Trumpet Studies is a nice contrast to his Daily Trumpet Exercises. Where the later was meant as a daily journal of exercises to stay in shape, this volume is meant as studies in improvisation and musical expression within the medium of jazz music. Bunny writes:
“The fine development of improvisation and its universal acceptance as a mark of distinctive virtuosity, is one of the notable advances in modern musicianship. Improvisation is not a new invention of rhythm music. In classical music, from Paganini to Kreisler, the artists’ ability to create melodic variations spontaneously was measured by the manner in which he improvised cadenzas…Spontaneous creations both in serious and rhythm music, is based on a common principle: a thoroughly complete knowledge of one’s instrument and the faculty to apply these music principles to the musical expression of that instrument.”
