Born on 16 October 1765 at Montbéliard in the east of France, Frédéric Duvernoy was a celebrated hornist with a long and varied career. Duvernoy held positions with Comédie Italienne, Concert Spirituel, Garde Nationale, Opéra-Comique, Paris Opéra, and Chapelle Musique. In 1795 he was appointed senior professor of horn at the Paris Conservatoire.

Duvernoy’s method is considered to be one of the most thorough ever created in explaining the 19th Century French school of horn playing. This method is also said to be much more beginner-friendly than any other contemporary method (such as the ones written by Domnich or Dauprat).
