I am certain that this project is among the most important we have ever taken on at qPress. Setting out, it seemed that this job would be a trivial, albeit rewarding, translating exercise. It turned out to be much more than that. Over the past 18 months, I have worked hand-in-hand with two wonderful translators, consulted with engravers, and spoke with historical experts in a variety of the topics that are covered in this book. The very elegant, stylized 19th century French was a wonderful challenge to decipher, and is represented here with as little modification as possible to keep a sense of Franquin’s beautiful phrasing. The musical examples from the book’s exposition have been re-engraved, while all of the illustrations and full-page musical notation have been preserved from the original. Our goal was to maintain the integrity of the source publication as much as possible, while creating a translation that will bring this wonderful grand method to a new generation of trumpeters.

Méthode Complète de Trompette Moderne (Complete Method for Modern Trumpet) by Merri Franquin is a 335 page conservatory method with all of the weight and importance of the Arban’s or the St.Jacome, but is little known in North America. This French method book has been used by all of the great European soloists, like Maurice Andre and Guy Touvron, who have both written extensively on how to use the book to its full potential. Enesco dedicated his famous solo piece “Légende” to Franquin, and the solo part of “Légende” and many other famous french works are included in the later half of the book. This is the first time this book has been available as a digital edition, and for only a third of the price and none of the massive weight of a hard copy.

The book is divided into two main parts. First is a theoretical part, then a practical part divided into 3 subsections.

As a method, it covers every possible area of trumpet playing to an extent that I cannot fit it all in this description. Everything from how to play from the very beginning, holding the trumpet and mouthpiece placement, thoughts on breathing, attack, and posture. These are followed by studies in flexibility, intervals, legato playing, high range, lots of transposition, studies, reading exercises, excerpts from solos and orchestral works, and much much more. I have included many samples, take a look, then dive in with a purchase above. I guarantee this is the most important trumpet book translation released in the 21st century.
