Saverio Mercadante’s opera Zaira revolves around the religious and romantic conflicts of its characters. Arban doesn’t hesitate to add his own virtuosic flair to Mercadante’s beautiful themes.
The solo is written for Bb trumpet and doesn’t ascend beyond written G above the staff. Although virtuosic, the performer isn’t required to use any multiple-tonguing. Due to the range and technical demands of the solo, we think this work is perfect as a first concert solo.
