From the Editor’s Note:
Histoire du Soldat is one of Igor Stravinsky’s most performed chamber works. It is published in the original edition (for seven players, three spoken parts, and a single dancer) and as a trio version for clarinet, violin, and piano scored by the composer. It is also frequently performed as a concert suite using the original instrumentation. Although the concert suite is in many respects identical to the original, it omits several movements as well as small sections within some movements where spoken parts with music occur.
This new edition is intended to eliminate any confusion as to what music should be included or eliminated in order to create a more definitive concert suite. Fortunately, Stravinsky performed or recorded the concert suite on many occasions indicating his intentions for the manner in which the work should be presented. However, unfortunately, he never published the work as a concert suite so his performances offer the only clues as to what an accurate setting of the work should be.
