Besides his regular section work and solos, Rex Stewart developed a plethora of trumpet “tricks” which added an entire new realm of ideas for the horn. In this book he shows you how he prepared for his gigs.

Rex Stewart played with Duke Ellington for eight years. Before that, he played with Fletcher Henderson, and before that, with McKinney’s Cotton Pickers. These three bands represent the greatest in their respective periods.

Rex always advocated for plenty of warming up before going on the job, as the trumpet or cornet can be awfully difficult to play cold. When one has played the preliminary set of exercises and solos in this book, then he is ready to do justice in a band. You would usually see Rex go off in a corner before rehearsal and practice very assiduously. That is why, from the very first number, he is ready and can give his best performance.

Many books on the trumpet have been written previous to this one, but none has captured the style and spirit of Rex Stewart’s playing as this one does.

Included is a complete warm up for the jazz trumpeter, followed by 6 jazz solos as played by Rex Stewart complete with piano accompaniment. You can see some samples for free to the left, then you can grab an immediate PDF download above.
