Frank Metis’ “Jazz Beats” is a wonderful jazz sight reading method book that helps players of all treble clef instruments work on their syncopated jazz reading while playing creative tunes. The idea of this book is broadly similar to Dufrense’s “Develop Sight Reading” but focused toward the jazz idiom instead of the classical style.

Consisting of 34 full page jazz tunes/etudes, Jazz Beats lays the groundwork for the melodic and rhythmic variety you can expect to find in a wide range of jazz styles. The range is not extremely high, and the rhythmic values are not extremely small, what you find instead is a series of studies aimed directly at the meat of standard jazz repertoire to challenge the seasoned player, and teach an intermediate student how to improve his reading on stage.
