Erik Veldkamp has been slowly developing the most in-depth series of books for the flugelhorn ever written. This instrument is loved by ALL brass players, and for everyone who owns one, it beckons you from its case and tempts you away from whatever you are focused on. It has special powers, and deserves its own grand method of study.
This book is part of a two part set. This book, The Intermediate Flugelhorn Workbook, comes first, followed by The Advanced Flugelhorn Workbook.
Both books begin the same with, with a series of 15 warm up exercises that take you through different aspects of playing. Beginning with Flow and Air Support, you slowly move on to Fingering, Flexibility, Tonguing, Range, Pitch Center, Chromatics, and Arpeggios.
After the warm up is where these two books differ. They both take you through a series of exercises that you are meant to play in each key, but their difficultly level is contained within the noted level of the book to give you progressive exercises to build off of.
Each key center contains an exercises on the Major and Minor Scale, Triads, Flexibility, Single Tongue, Double Tongue, Chromaticism, Broken Chords, Expanding Intervals, Lip Slurs, Articulation Patterns, Airflow & Pitch Center, Triple Tonguing, Pentatonics, Broken Chords, Fingering, and Arpeggios.
You could choose a handful of these in each key, each day, and create a full weekly or monthly practice routine that is right at your level and guaranteed to increase your ability and confidence on the instrument.
Don’t have a flugelhorn yet? No problem, these work GREAT on trumpet, and will give you the impetus to go new horn shopping, I guarantee it.
