As you are no doubt aware, there is a need for literature that requires the performer to move fluently from the lowest register to higher registers, within a single phrase or lip setting. Traditional trumpet music simply has not made that kind of demands upon the player. Intervallic leaps are also an important part of the Etudes. The emphasis, in this collection, is NOT upon the lowest and highest registers. My personal favorite is Etude Ten: subtitled, “The Banjo”.

These etudes were specially created to force the player to become adept at abruptly changing octaves. If I remember correctly, the highest tone is G3, and Pedal C is more than once! (grin) These etudes will definitely “test your tenacity” – grade 5 at least, but for range requirements, probably grade 6.

Let’s not mess about. These are hard! But dig in, because they are worth the effort.

To the left you can play an entire etude for free, and below you can listen to Clyde perform it. Above you can grab an immediate digital download of the both the audio and the book. Enjoy!
