In discussing ideas for a trumpet book with Billy Butterfield, he hit upon one that would appeal to most trumpet players. There are many excellent method books on the market and solo books by wonderful trumpeters, but there has never been a trumpet book devoted to different styles of jazz solos all in one volume.

This book represents most of the great styles and took many painstaking and laborious months to compile and edit. It was through Mr. Butterfield’s friendship with many of these great artists that this book was made possible.

All of these solos were taken from actual phonograph records and if it is possible to secure the records, you will be able to follow the solos note by note. Each one was transcribed by an expert, and include a full piano solo accompaniment was written to conform with the original arrangement, as performed. After the solos were compiled, and transcribed, Billy Butterfield edited them and wrote the accompanying notes about each man. Billy feels that this book may aid the young trumpeter to formulate a style of his own or perhaps learn the art of improvisation by analyzing what these great artists have done.
