Alphonse Goeyens was a Belgian trumpet player who lived at the turn of the 20th century. Anyone who studies this piece, Fantasie Dramatique, should quickly be able to tell that its composer was a trumpet player, due to how well it sits on the instrument.
Goeyens understood the full breadth of expression of the trumpet, and takes full advantage of it in this piece. Beginning with irreverent bugle calls and urgent declarations, the music quickly becomes lyrical and poetic. The soloist gets to enjoy a huge variety of characters and styles in this relatively short work.
