Derek Thorsteinsson’s new work for unaccompanied trumpet entitled “Ghosts in the Machine” is a contemplative and etherial work. Which being technically challenging and very stylistically mature, it has a spaciousness that makes the length and involvement of the piece quite manageable. Borrowing from modern culture and varying styles, this unabashedly modern piece of recital repertoire doesn’t hide its origins; In fact, the second movement is based on the piece ‘The Sad Man With A Box’ by Murray Gold from the Doctor Who soundtrack.
