This book is absolutely brilliant. This book asks the question “can you teach jazz to players early in their development?” Many people would say no. Gornston says YES!
This book takes just one page to lay out a very basic idea of what jazz stylization sounds like, then uses the rest of the book to take very simple melodies (like “Skip To My Lou” in the samples to the left) and gives the player tons of ideas about how to jazz it up, make it more interesting, and have FUN making music.
By the time you have played through all of the alternate swing choruses to these simple tunes, you will have the confidence to stylize any melody in modern swing style, and there is nothing better than building that type of confidence in muscianship.
