Maury’s First Contest Solo is an excellent piece to learn as a way to help break into more advanced repertoire. The music is exciting, and allows the performer to explore many different colours and characters. The trumpet solo doesn’t go above concert G on top of the staff, and it doesn’t necessarily require any multiple tonguing, but the overall length and length of phrases contributes to its difficulty. This is a perfect solo for people playing at a freshman undergraduate level.
