For most of his career, Clifton Williams was primarily regarded as a French Hornist, having performed regularly with the San Antonio and New Orleans Symphonies. Clifton also held positions as professor of music at the University of Texas and the University of Miami.

The composer suggests the use of either Bb trumpet or Eb trumpet and provides parts for both. The music takes advantage of the trumpet’s full scope of colour and expression – opening fanfares give way to lyrical melodies, and the end is a display of virtuosity and excitement. Truly an exemplary piece of music.
