America’s unofficial ambassador of music always met with immediate and overwhelming response wherever audiences gathered to hear the modern jazz beat of Dizzy Gillespie. His album “World Statesman” was recorded in 1956 and released on the Norgran label. These tunes introduced the new Dizzy Gillespie big band which was making headlines for the acclaim it received (and for the excitement it caused) during its State Department-sponsored world tours. This brilliant and historic orchestra showed a great deal of spirit, power and creativity.

In this folio, edited by Quincy Jones, are his outstanding solos from the World Statesman album, along with others as well, complete with piano accompaniment and chord progressions so you can take this from the practice room, to the studio, to the stage. The solos covered are:

  1. Dizzy’s Business – Original busy solo business with improvised arabesques.
  2. Jessica’s Day – A melodic invention composed by Quincy Jones and dedicated to the daughter of jazz commentator Nat Hentoff.
  3. Doodlin’ – Horace Silvers· big rune in a powerful, modern funky blues arrangement.
  4. Tour De Force – arranged by Dizzy in Athens, is a rhythmic romp with subtle dynamics.
  5. Man Teca – Latin jazz as written by Dizzy Gillespie and “Gil'” Fuller.
  6. Whisper Not – A slow, bouncy and tuneful rune by Benny Golson.
  7. Afro-Paris (Titoro) – Billy Taylor’s great mambo-jazz composition builds into an exciting solo of improvisations and melodies by Dizzy.
  8. Dizzy’s Blues –  is blues at its best and is predicated on a call-and-response riff.
  9. Groovin’ For Nat – An Ernie Wilkins original dedicated to Nat Henroff and inspiringly played by Dizzy.
