Sandole’s Craft of Jazz series is one of the most important sets of jazz texts in the history of the genre. These are the books that taught legendary artists like John Coltrane how to improvise. At 368 pages, this is the longest, most in-depth method we have ever sold at qPress.

THE CRAFT OF JAZZ I, Apprentice, is for the competent instrumentalist who wants to acquire skills in the jazz idiom. This book is NOT for a beginner. Instrumental facility and a knowledge of scales, intervals, and chords are prerequisites. This course offers much more than improvisation, it is a complete music education: improvisation, sight singing, ear training, keyboard harmony, and composing lines.

The purpose of the book is to teach the principles of tonality, helping the player to “hear” all the musical components in relationship to one another in MOTION, as he improvises. The procedure is ear training applied to the instrument. The player must not only “know” the material, but must learn how to “hear” it.
